Another NEXT tonight

NEXT is a new music show at 1071thepeak.com. It is on tonight at 11 and repeats on Sundays at 8. Big Thanks to Snapple for sponsoring NEXT though the summer.

The Playlist

Matt Pond PA - Halloween (Several Arrows Later)
Now a Brooklyn band but they kept the PA...leftover from Philly days. Great indie rock/pop music. This is cd number 5 and they are all worth checking out.

Mojave 3 - Breaking The Ice (Puzzles Like You)
New cd due out soon. They came from the ashes of Slowdive. This might be their best.

The Submarines - Vote (Declare a New State)
Love conquers all. Good back story about Boy meeting girl then going their seperate ways only to get back together to record music together. NICE.

Pearl Jam - Severed Hand (Pearl Jam)
Great CD. Period.

Alexi Murdoch - Dream About Flying (Time without Consequence)
My CD of the moment. Ray LaMontagne with a bit of Nick Drake.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Wishing Well (Howl Sessions EP)
Some ep's are throw aways. Leftovers. Not in this case. If Howl made you happy then this will be a welcomed addition.

Grant-Lee Phillips - Under The Milky Way (Church Cover) (nineteeneighties)
Nothing but covers from his fav 80s tunes. Including the Pixies, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure and more.

The Replacements - Message To The Boys (Don't you think I know who I was?)
Another Greatest hits with of course two new songs. This being one of them. Not bad. First new material in 16 years.

Watershed - The Best Is Yet To Come (Fifth of July)
From Ohio power poppers in the Cheap vein of things. Thanks Jon for the heads-up.

Jose Gonzalez - Crosses (Veneer)
One of the quiet is the new loud people. Great cd and one you will listen to for the rest of your life.

Johnny Cash - It's All Over (personal file)
It's a concert from Johnny to you in your cd player. Just the man and guitar and a mircophone. A must have for Man in Black fans.

Next week 5 tonight

NEXT is on tonight at 11. Streaming live at 1071thepeak.com. NEXT is sponsored by the good music loving people at Snapple. Thank you Snapple.

Playlist:
Mellowdrone – Fashionably Uninvited (Box)
There is something for Jocks. Nerds, hipsters, rockers and stoners can find something to love on this cd
Built to Spill – Lair (you in reverse)
Five years off seems to have done Built to spill good. Last year was MMJs turn to get noticed now I think it only fair to notice this band. These guys remember the guitar solo. See them live it could be a religious experience.
Calexico – Deep Down (Garden Ruin)
This band continues to amaze and continues to evolve. This cd takes them away from their Latin influences. More like early Wilco.
Shemekia Copeland – You can’t have that (The Soul Truth)
Big woman with a big voice. You’d better listen.
Glen Phillips – I want a new drug (Mr. Lemons) cover of Huey Lewis
Very mellow and subtle. A cd that you will listen to for years to come.
Cowboy Mouth – Joe Strummer (Voodoo Shoppe)
Greatest reason to break up with a girl ever put to music. If nothing else you’ll want to download this one and listen and laugh. Then repeat.
The M’s – Going Over It (Future Women)
Chicago indie rock at it’s finest.
The Beautiful Girls – When I had you With Me (We’re already gone)
Two guys from Down Under that call themselves Beautiful girls…now before you get all freud on them just enjoy the wonderful cd. This is for fans of Ben Harper or Jack Johnson.
Ben Folds with William Shatner – Rockin the Suburbs (Over the Hedge OST)
Reworked the lyrics for this tune for the new movie Over the Hedge. I actually think this version bites alittle harder on non-city life. The captain is the friendly neighbor in the middle of the tune.
dUES – Nothing Really Ends (Pocket Revoloution)
7 years since their last cd but they pick up where they left off. We quiet jazzy pop songs.
The Walkmen – Another One Goes By (A hundred miles off)
Good cd not great. I can’t get the Dylan thing outta my head.

Thanks for listening.

Too tired to think up something

Pearl Jams new HQ is a dump. Well almost. Talk about timing.

Who invented the Devil Horns Hand gesture? Not who you think. Is there anything the Beatles didn't do first? Plus you should never believe anything by Gene Simmons.

Billy Corgan Jumps Onstage With Alice in Chains
Thursday night in Los Angeles, a reformed ALICE IN CHAINS were joined by BILLY CORGAN, VELVET REVOLVER bassist DUFF McKAGAN and ex-SCREAMING TREES frontman MARK LANEGAN as they officially kicked off their world tour. The band will finish up their North American run through the end of the month, before heading to Europe and Japan. From rolling stone mag.

Having Hit the Beatles, Cirque Du Soleil Does Elvis
Cirque du Soleil, the Canadian acrobatic troupe famous for its elaborate sets and costumes, will soon begin work on a series of shows based upon the life of ELVIS PRESLEY -- and featuring his music. Touring performances are expected to begin in late 2007, with the first museum set to open in late 2008. Earlier this year, the Cirque du Soleil received the blessing of PAUL McCARTNEY, RINGO STARR, YOKO ONO and GEORGE HARRISON's widow, OLIVIA, to work on the first-ever musical production of BEATLES songs. That show, "Love," will open in a custom-built theater in Las Vegas' Mirage Hotel and Casino. Also from RS.

First time in their career the RHCP at number one. And the record is almost gold already.

Not exactly sure how to feel about this. Billy Joel to get tv show based on his life for Showtime.

a new Meat Loaf song called "The Monster is Loose" from his forthcoming 'Bat Out of Hell 3' album has been leaked online. The song was co-written by Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx. I'd like to see them in the studio together. Now that is a reality show I may watch. Strike that I wouldn't but still...

NEXT Playlist for Week 4

Playlist for NEXT Week 4

The Concretes – Chosen One (in colour)
From Sweden. Since their formation as an all-female trio in 1995, they've added a few boys to the mix (the group now numbers eight) A lush wall of sound that reminds us a bit of Spector.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Turn it Again (Stadium Acaradium)
Double cd should make them a shoe in for the Hall of Fame in 2011. Now usually a double cd could be or should be just a single cd but on this one there is not a bad song. Unfortuately there’s not a great song either. Maybe they should have just released a single cd.

Aljendro Escovedo – Break this Time(the Boxing mirror)
You should have something by this guy in your collection. He is the real deal. He consistently puts out wonderful albums yet still remains under the radar. Start anywhere with this guy and get ready for the magic. A true artist in an age of pretenders, imitators and poseurs.

Shawn Mullins – We could go and start Again (9th avenue picking palour)
Atlanta-based Shawn Mullins headed southwest to make his new album.
The title, 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor, refers to the New Orleans studio where much of the record was cut.

The Weepies – the world spins madly on(say I am you)
An album of love in the melodic folk-pop vein with sweet harmonies, gentle guitar picking. If you’ve ever been in love or lost love then this cd will sound perfect. This song was also in Friends with Money.

The Wood Brothers – One more day
This is a “I don’t wan the party to end so a few friends are sitting on the porch sustaining the buzz” Cd. A mellower G.Love type vibe. This is a cd of Oliver Woods songs with his brother Chris Woods (best know as a the Woods part of Medseki, Martin and Woods) adding backing vocals and bass. Like drums and percussion on about half the tracks by Kenny Wollesen.

Morningwood – Knock on Wood (cover)
There have been almost enough covers of this song to play a different one each day of the year.
Now depending on how you feel, maybe how old you are or act and how many beers you’ve had. This band either has the coolest name or the world’s worst. Music from this New York band may be fluff but it’s fun fluff.

Human Television – tonight’s the night (Look at Who You Are Talking To)
Remember when REM was yours. Before Green. That is how I feel about Human Television. Now I am not saying that they will ever reach REM heights and in a way I hope Human Television stays mine. Well ours as I have just shared them with you. If they do hit is bigger then you can stay the used to be mine. Enjoy.

Regina Spektor – on the radio (Begin to Hope)
So Ben Folds and Fiona Apple walk into a bar…this new cd is a bit more poppy then her former jazzy piano jams. Not a bad thing. Her whimsical and quirkiness still shines through.

Paul Simon - Once upon a time there was an ocean (Surprise)
Still amazing after all these years. After taking a six year break Paul Simon is back with Surprise. He worked with Brian Eno on this one.

The Stills – She’s Walking out (Without Feathers)
a much different sound on this cd then on Logic Will Break Your Heart. If this cd was their first I’d be interested and think I can’t wait for number two and if “Logic” was their second release I’d be thinking “second coming” instead another lesson in be careful Anticipation leads to heartbreak.

Indigeous – Fool me again (chasing the sun)
When they first hit the scene screams of SVR has come again. All in the family. Two brother on guitar. Sister on drums and they throw in a cousin too. This fills the blues-rock

Hope you enjoyed the show. Thanks for listening and remember you can get the tunes as an iMix. Just search for an iMix named "Next week 4"

Happy Mum's Day

That Al Gore is one funny dude. on SNL. Great opening bit. Or maybe for some reason you think Bush Was Right. Video. I swear the tune is the Emo version of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire". Try to tell me I'm wrong.

50 most loathesome people. I think I may have posted this before. If so sorry but worth reading again.

Thom York solo --sorry that's right he doesn't want to call it a solo project.

Bloc Party Is Coming to America
BLOC PARTY -- set to headline both Toronto's Olympic Island festival and Chicago's Intonation Festival in June -- will return to the U.S. for a short late-summer run. Kicking off the run July 28th at Boston's Bank Pavilion with the London hipsters -- who are currently working on the follow-up to their 2005 debut Silent Alarm with producer JACKKNIFE LEE -- on select dates will be joined by psychedelic rockers SECRET MACHINES (July 28th in Boston and July 29th in Brooklyn, New York) and Canadian collective BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE (August 3rd in Los Angeles and August 4th in Berkeley, California). Denmark's MEW are also on board for the entire two-week jaunt. Tickets go on sale beginning May 20th, while pre-sale tickets become available to the band's fan club, Marshals, on May 15th. From Rolling Stone.

So I just listened to the advance of The Raconteurs. I hate when the radio song is the best song on the cd. Just bums me out. I had such high hopes for that CD. If the only thing it does is introduce people to Brendan Benson then I guess I will be happy. Also not very happy with the advance of Sam Roberts latest. First off it wouldn't run on my computer(also our radio station's music is on computers so even if I wanted to play this I would have to go the long way around--stupid). Christ haven't we learned from Sony about DRMs. Plus I thought Canadians were suppose to be mellower. Anyway I was addicted to his last cd but this cd will just fade away. The Stills will be in the same catagory. Sadly. On a brighter note the advance on Dan Wilson is decent. It's no "A Great Divide" that's for sure. Think Westerberg solo but Semisonic was no The Replacements and Wilson is no Westerberg but I think you get the idea.

Trends in Satellite Radio. Interesting. Stern? Who cares? Only 8% of his listeners followed. Nice waste of money. He was barely worth it when he was on free radio with 42 minutes of commericals.

NEXT WEEK 3 tonight

pp

Playlist for Week Three—tonight at 11 at 1071thepeak.com
NEXT
is sponsored by Snapple. Thank you Snapple.

Moonbabies – war on sound
You might recognize the song from Grey’s Anatomy. Decent show with a great soundtrack.

Pearl Jam – marker in the sand
Angry energy of the first few albums combined with the musical prowess of their late period. Just because PJ didn’t do what you wanted them to do doesn’t mean this CD is a comeback. I hope REM is taking notes

I love you but I have chosen darkness – according to plan
This cd would be perfect on 120 minutes if you remember that show on MTV. You would think they are from Manchester not texas. Greatest Moniker…ever. Also search for their 2002 ep with Brit Daniels of Spoon producing.

Raconteurs –steady as she goes acoustic
They are having fun. That’s nice to hear also Jack just had a baby and he didn’t name it anything werid I guess since Apple was already taken he went with Scarlett

Black Angels – Bloodhounds on my trail
Another band from Austin. Did you listen to the secret machines cd and think I wish there was a band out there that was kinda like them but heavier and darker and a wee bit trippy. Ok very trippy.

Jenny lewis and the Watson twins – You are what you love
Front lady of Rilo Kiley turns into Indie rock Dolly parton.

The boy least likey to – be gentle with me (The best party ever)
Don’t be fooled by the cover art—looks very kid albumish. It’s not. CD just gets better with each listen.

Gnarls Barkley – Gone daddy gone cover of Violent femmes (St Elsewhere)
Danger Mouse is at it again. You might remember him from the Grey album the mashup of the Beatles White LP and Jay Z’s Black LP. He also hangs out with Gorillaz—the cartoon side project from Blur front man Damon Albarn. This time he teams up with CEE – LO a rapper that help develop the Dirty South sound to create a magical cd

Guillemots – Trains to Brazil (ep from the cliffs)
The Guillemots may be based in the U.K., but if ever there was such a thing as an international band, they're it. Consisting of a British frontman, a Scottish drummer, a Brazilian guitarist and a Canadian on double-bass
named after a cliff-dwelling sea bird

Widespread panic – second skin (Earth to America)
The Panic capture what their live show sounds like on this song. Hopefully the rest of the album follows through. When the cd comes out it will also be available on vinyl with 2 bonus tracks not on the cd.

Augustana – lonely people (all the stars and boulevards)
After growing up on the West Coast, lead singer Dan Layus landed at Greenville College in Illinois and met like-minded people (musically speaking.) They started playing together and christened themselves Augustana which is thought to be Latin for 'a small glimpse of hope.' ("We're not 100% sure of this," says Dan with a laugh. "We've tried researching it.")

V Entertainment Network reports:
On June 27, 2006 Zoe/ Rounder Records will release "nineteeneightees," a new album of alternative favorites from Grant-Lee Phillips. The follow up to his highly acclaimed studio album, "Virginia Creeper" released in 2004, this release, culled from the era that brought us Reganomics, frozen yogurt and dayglow, features eleven tracks which generally represent the most influential songs and artists of his formative years. Featuring semi-acoustic renderings of cult classics by The Pixies, Joy Division, REM, The Cure, Robyn Hitchcock, The Church, Nick Cave, New Order, Echo And The Bunnymen and The Smiths, "nineteeneightees" exhumes an age whose underground music has long outlasted the more popular songs of its airwaves

f.r.i.d.a.y.

so piracy is worse then child p0rn? WTF? Congress readies new copyright bill.Inquirer reports: THE NEW look Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) seems to be giving the world an unusual moral code.... It appears that the DMCA will have a maximum sentence of ten years inside for the crime of software and music piracy. It will also give the FBI the powers to wiretap suspected pirates.... assaulting a police officer will get you five years, downloading child porn will get you seven years, assaulting without a weapon will get you ten years and aggravated assault six years.
So in other words if you copy a Disney CD and sell it you will be in the same league as a paedophile who is distributing pictures of sexual attacks on children. [the Feds can't control the border but they want to wiretap DVD and CD pirates?

Flea said he would be really sad and you'd break his heart if you listen to leaked songs from the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album 'Stadium Arcadium' on the Internet. So if you want to risk hurting Flea, you can now stream the entire new double album over at Vh1. We're assuming these are higher quality versions of the song then the leaks that so broke Flea's heart.

NEW REM. If it doesn't sound like the old REM I'm not buying. It use to be automatic. Now...not so much. If U2 can get loads of praise for returning to form and copying themselves then surely REM can do me this favor.

White Stripes rocker Jack White and his wife, model Karen Elson, announced Thursday that they had their first child together Tuesday in Tennessee. They named their baby girl Scarlett Teresa, according to White's rep. What's with the name? It's quite normal--thank you Jack. Was Apple taken?

Guns N’ Roses will open two German dates on the Rolling Stones’ upcoming tour of Europe, a role they last performed during the Stones’ 1989 U.S. trek.

Grand Opening of NEXT

To anyone that listened last week. Thank you. Here is the playlist for tonight.

Week Two Playlist For NEXT.

Rock Kills Kid—Paralyzed (Are you Nervous?)
Are You Nervous? will be released on May 16, they show flashes of brilliance that indicate they will be worth keeping an eye on (or more enjoyably, an ear).
It’s like they just popped out of an I Love the 80s comp

My Morning Jacket – Wordless Chorus (Z)
One of my favs of last year. Should be in your collection. Don’t be afraid to visit their back catalogue.

Goldfrapp – Number One (Supernature)
Released in the UK last year but only recently released here in the states. This band has just been tagged to open for the RHCPs.

The Twilight Singers- Underneath the Waves (Powder Burns)
I don’t do new years resolutions but this year was the year I was going to get the Afghan Whigs back together. That was my goal. Still is but after hearing this cd but Greg Dulli’s latest band I think I have a hard road ahead of me. It’s Greg Dulli all grownz up. It’s a full album. Listen to it that way.
Also A collaborative album with Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan, under the name The Gutter Twins, should make its way into stores next year. Yummy.

Arctic Monkeys – Settle for a draw (Whatever People say I am, That’s What I’m not)
Yes they live up to the hype and yes you should go relive your youth and get this cd. They just released an EP that has another 4 new tunes that is worth it too.

The Yeah yeah yeahs – Cheated Heart (Show your bones)
A bit of a sophomore slump—Maybe. Enough to write them off definitely not. Their debut cd was a kick in the face this one is dare I say mature which I think it part of the problem.

Tapes n Tapes – Insistor (The Loon)
Accurately described as the illegitimate red-headed stepchild of the Pixies' Frank Black and former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus

Ray Davies – Other people’s lives (Other People’s Lives)
You know him. You love him. Now go love his solo cd.

Giant Drag – cover of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Games (Hearts and unicorns/ re-issue)
the gap between P.J. Harvey, Elastica and My Bloody Valentine with songs of texture, density, and the strangest mix of cute and dark. Like a squirrel with a flamethrower.

Band of Horses- The Funeral (Everything all the time)
Band of the moment for me. Top 5 cd of the year. They sound equally good when on headphones or blasting from a car stereo. I have tried both and encourage both.

Ambulance LTD – New English (New English EP)
A stop gap until the full CD is ready. Worth getting for a great cover of Floyd’s “Fearless”

Ben Harper- Picture in a Frame (Both Sides of the Gun)
The man matters. Sure this isn’t his best but I will buy anything by this guy. And see him live.

Remember that NEXT is an iMix. Go to the iMix page and search for an iMix named "NEXT Week Two"

Are you ready for Thor? in all of his 70s glory. Mister John Thor via YouTube.
