I Should Really Post More Often

An Interested Jeff Tweedy Listens Intently As I Heap Praise Upon His Band

What a concert weekend in Chicago.
You had Wilco, Wolfmother, Tenacious D, The Black Keys, Brazilian Girls and My Morning Jacket all in town within a couple of days.
I attended two of these shows myself.
Friday I was lucky enough to see My Morning Jacket rock the Riviera Theatre.
I have seen MMJ open twice for Pearl Jam and again at Lollapalooza, but as headliner is where they really shine.
On an encore, the band came out in tuxes accompanied by the Chicago Youth Symphony. The symphony really fleshed out some of the songs and added a nice touch to the slower numbers.
The band seamlessly blended genres in a sonic cacophony of audible bliss. If not a believer, see this band live.
It has been an amazing year of concerts for me this year, but I think this might have been the best show I have been to, and that is saying alot.

A clip from Friday's show (link might not work for long)

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=FE0C433D7CBE45BF

Saturday I got to see Wilco at the Auditorium Theatre. I have been to almost every music venue in the city and I think this might be the best sounding room I have ever seen a show in.
It helped that Wilco was in rare form and delivered an inspired set that closed out thier tour here in the states.

After the show, I grabed a bite at a diner next door and saw some people milling about outside. It was then that I got to meet Jeff Tweedy. It was really cool to just say a quick hello and tell him how much I enjoyed his work. Nice guy.
Observe fuzzy, crappy cell phone pic.
Thanks Tina.

I might do a record review post soon, released or soon to be released records I am currently digesting:

Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead - So Divided
Beck - The Information
My Morning Jacket - Okonokos
Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
Mogwai - Zidane A 21st Century Portrait
Slowlands - Never Was There A Town
Tenacious D - The Pick Of Destiny
The Beatles - Love

Next Week 32

Next, 107.1 The Peak's New music show is on tonight at 11pm and repeats on Sunday nights at 8pm. It is brought to you by Snapple. I am collecting votes for your favorite NEXT tunes for an end of the year countdown. Email your favs. Thanks. Next is also an iMix. Search iTunes in the MUSIC section for an iMix named "Next Week 32".

The Playlist for NEXT streaming at 1071thepeak.com

Tokyo Police Club – Be Good (A Lesson In Crime)
Another Canadian band. A Bunch of barely legal teens that write tight, fun freak out energy type tunes.

Barenaked Ladies – Maybe You’re Right (Barenaked Ladies are Me)
First cd well except a holiday cd for their own record label Desperation Records.

Clinic – Harvest Within You (Visitations)
The act's Visitations, which hit stores in the United Kingdom in October, will see release in North America Jan. 23, and the act's hoping to make its delayed release worth the wait. The CD version of the album will contain two still unnamed bonus tracks and be packaged in a hardbook case, while vinyl fans will get a poster, though no bonus cuts, for their patience.

Stanton Moore – Poison Pushy
He like a few other drummers started banging on his mother’s pots, pans and tuperware. One project can satisfy him so he has drummed for Galactic, Garage A Trois and solo projects. For his third solo album (he’s also recorded six with Galactic and three with Garage a Trois), and is working on a new Galactic cd as we speak.

Nouvelle Vague – The Killing Moon (Bande A Part) Echo and the Bunnymen cover
With a name that means "new wave" in English and "bossa nova" in Portuguese, Nouvelle Vague's moniker neatly sums up the group's concept: remaking classic new wave singles with a Brazilian pop twist.

Damien Rice – Accidental Babies (9)
Back after 4 years with his second cd is Damien Rice the Irish singer songwriter. BiPolar? Well he did record this all the while getting through a break up. Happy and seemingly joyful one minute, then achingly depressing the next

Jennifer O’Connor – Tonight We Ride (Over the Mountain, Across the Valley and Back to the Stars)
Jennifer's career began in Atlanta, where after college she joined Violet, a band compared to X and the Pixies. She started playing solo after quitting Violet and moving to NYC.
Jennifer released her debut EP, Truth Love Work, in 2000. Solo cd number three.

Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler – Why Worry (Real Love Roadrunning)
Dire Straits leader Knopfler and country thrush Harris teamed up earlier this year for the studio offering All the Roadrunning, and several tracks from that album resurface in similar arrangements on this live CD/DVD set. The rest is made up of tunes from Harris and Knopfler's past

Yusuf Islam - I Think I See The Light (An Other Cup)
The Cat is back…cheesey? Yes. the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens has finally come out of his self-imposed retirement, First album in 28 years. The cd in a nutshell. Peaceful, mellow and hopeful.

Johnny Osbourne – We Need Love (A Brokedown Melody OST)
A reggae singer for over 25 years and if he keeps up a friendship with Jack Johnson he could last another 25 years. You can also find this song on 1980s Truth and Rights.

The Strollers – Into the Dark
After calling it quits in 2001 after only 2 full length cds the band decided to get back together for a few gigs. That was supposed to be it. Well that has lead to more gigging and the recording of three new songs. They are from Sweden and started out as a Chuck Berry cover band.

Back From Mini Vacation

and I have fianlly arisen from my turkey coma. Had a great time in Philly. Thanks PA.

Buy Nothing Day. Really people do you have to get there at Midnight? Although I love watching the film of the people trampling the other shoppers once the doors open. It happens every year and I just think Darwin Award. Just watch out for the Saturday before Christmas. I think that will be the dangerous night.

Will it blend? Thanksgiving Dinner.

Bloc Party's new one A Weekend in the City is coming soon. Hear Prayer.

Where can the aging Boomer get music advice> Well besides NEXT. AARP of course.

The iPhone? Soon?

When in doubt a Hitler post. Always a hit with the kids. Actually this is quite cool. New technology can read Hitler's lips in his home movies.

Next week 30

Next is a new music show brought to you by Snapple. You can hear it tonight at 11 on 107.1 The Peak (stream here). If you miss it tonight you can catch the repeat on Sunday night at 8. It is also an iMix. Search for an iMix named "Next week 30" at iTunes. Thanks.

The Playlist:

Jim Noir – Tell Me What to Do (Tower of Love)
who is often seen sporting a bowler hat and a suit, writes, produces and plays all his own instruments.

The Lemonheads – Let’s Just Laugh (Self Titled)
a rockier, edgier version of the Lemonheads. It’s not exactly what you might call a ‘dark’ album but definitely sweet on the outside, but sour on the inside.

Citizen Cope – More than it Seems (Every Waking Moment)
Citizen Cope is both a person (Clarence Greenwood) and a band. He plays the keyboard, guitar, sings, and acts as a DJ, songwriter, and producer.

The Black Crowes – If It Ever Stops Raining (The Lost Crowes)
The Lost Crowes is a two-disc double album of previously unreleased material from the band and features their signature sound of great blues mixed with rock.

The Walkmen – Subterranean Homesick Blues (Pussy Cats)
Immediately after recording "A Hundred Miles Off" and faced with the imminent closing of their studio, the Walkmen decided, on a lark, to record their own version of Harry Nilsson's 1974 album "Pussy Cats which was Produced by John Lennon during his "lost weekend" separation from Yoko Ono. So this is a cover of a cover

The Twilight Singers – The Lure Would Prove Too Much (A Stitch In Time EP)
The Twilight Singers is former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli's latest project

Foo Fighters – Everlong (Skin and Bones)
Foo Fighters, the band founded 12 years ago by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, A DVD from the same shows is expected to be released in late November

Destroyer – Watercolours Into The Ocean (Destroyer’s Rubies)
Dan Bejar has issued forth another batch of his songwriting wealth, Bejar has cultivated quite the cult following with his folk-pop anthems. "The goal was to make a jazz record recorded completely live off the floor," Bejar revealed about Rubies. "The inevitability of not realizing this goal became apparent far before we reached the studio, which is good cause it's bad to have goals." You hear that, kids? Goals are bad. By virtue of his Canadian citizenship, Bejar has of course involved himself in an avalanche of side projects. Beyond the work in New Pornographers, DB hopes to unleash a record by his band Bonaparte and started practicing with a new duo, Hello Blue Roses

Owen – Bad News (At Home With Owen)
In the past decade, Chicago's Mike Kinsella has played a variety of instruments in a handful of bands including Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football, Owls, Maritime, and Aloha. Owen is his solo project. This is his 4th solo cd.

Califone – Sunday Noises (Roots and Crowns)
How many bands come back from the brink of break-up to produce some of their best and most innovative work? A mainstay of the Chicago experimental scene, Califone plays wistful songs with a constant, thin hum of dark and lush melodies, and hushed vocals.

NEXT WEEK 29

In case you missed Next last night don't worry yourself at all. NEXT repeats on Sunday night at 8. You can stream it at 1071thepeak.com. Don't forget that Snapple sponsors the show and without them you wouldn't heard all of this glorious music on the air. Also remember that you can listen on the radio (remember those things) if you find yourself in/around NYC at 107.1 The Peak.

Last night's Playlist:

The Honeydogs – Too Close to the Sun (Amygdala)
From Minneapolis. It's a rock version of a good Sunday afternoon, chill-out disc. 6th cd.

Bob Dylan – Beyond the Horizon (Modern Times)
Really only Dylan can come up with new songs that sound like classics.

Spoon – The Book I Write (OST Stranger Than Fiction)
This song and some instrumentals are also on the Soundtrack of the Will Farrell movie. Hopefully this is his Eternal Sunshine. Spoon have stated that they are half way through a new cd. Look for it in April or May.

The Distants – Falling Apart (Broken Gold)
An LA band with a hard edge New Wave sound. Some hear Blondie combined with Jane’s Addiction I hear Pat Benetar. This is their debut cd. They show promise. Download the few songs that touch you.

Placebo – Running up that Hill (Single)
Kate Bush Tune.

Plus/Minus – One Day You’ll Be There (Let’s Build a Fire)
It’s been three years since their promising second cd. This their third full length doesn’t disappoint. Fun fact: This cd was first released in Japan

Willie Nelson – Rainy Day Blues (Songbird)
On ``Songbird,'' alt-country hipster Ryan Adams supplies the songs and the band, and Willie Nelson supplies that unmistakable voice.

Kasey Chambers – Nothing At All (Carnival)
Her first band was all in the family Called Dead Ringer Band. In 1999 she went solo with her first cd. This is her 4th solo cd.

Gomez – Step Inside (Five Men In A Hut A’s, B’s and Rarities 1998-2004)
The five Southport Lads first gig was in 1996 and The lineup has not changed since the band's beginning. Tthey have 7 studio LPs and this collection of UK hits and B Sides. It is also a DVD.

Bright Eyes – I will Be Grateful for This Day (Noise Floor Rarities 1998-2005)
16 songs collected for your listening pleasure. It actually works as an album. It is strange that a collection of unreleased and rarities might actually turn out to be one of his better cds front to back.

Liquid Carousel – Melting Away (The Full Cincinnati)
A band from New York’s Backyard. They have been together for awhile (more than a decade) and affect today’s youth in many ways. There is, of course, the obvious Rock and roll element but also a few of the guys in the band are teachers. Teachers rock.

Billy Idol singing Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. The video is only a snippet.

New Norah Jones in Jan.

PR reports:
Neil Young & Crazy Horse's concerts on March 6th and 7th, 1970 at New York's Fillmore East have been the subject of legend for decades. The nights featured Young with the original lineup of Crazy Horse: Danny Whitten (guitar, vocals), Ralph Molina (drums, vocals), Billy Talbot (bass) and Jack Nitzsche (electric piano), performing at the very peak of their powers. Those two nights are among the only officially recorded shows of the band with these members, and as the debut release of the Neil Young Archives Performance Series, the album Live At The Fillmore East will be available November 14, 2006 on Reprise Records.

Next week 28

a music blog from a Next listener. You can listen tonight at 1071thepeak.com. Wednesday at 11pm and it repeats on Sundays at 8pm. Snapple sponsors NEXT so a big thank you to them. You need to get to the bottom of this post. Really.

The playlist for NEXT at 107.1 The Peak.

Joseph Arthur – Too Much To Hide (Nuclear Daydream)
the first rock-oriented act on Gabriel’s Real World label.
An accomplished painter too

John Mayer – Slow Dancing In A Burning Room
3rd cd of white guy laid back bluesy tunes—file this one under dinner tunes.

The Splendid Nobodies – Everything’s All Right (Strange Trip)
From Boston-- sophomore cd. It’s the blues-meets-rockabilly sound

Arctic Monkeys – Put Your Dukes Up John (Leave Before The Lights Come On EP)
Followup ep to Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, walked away with England's prestigious Mercury Music Prize (think our grammy) earlier this year. It was also the fastest-selling debut album in U.K. music history.

The Yayhoos – Roam (Put The Hammer Down) (B-52s)
From the ashes of Georgia Satelittes and Steve Earles the backup band the Dukes comes the second cd from the Yayhoos. Loud, smart, catchy rock and roll.

The Rakes – Work, Work, Work (Capture/Release)
It all began 3 years ago in college or university as it is know in the UK when two blokes met and wanted to start a band. They met 2 more blokes and the rest they say is history. They music is a bit of the stranglers meshed with The Strokes. Pretty straight forward punk. This is their first full length. It was released in the uk in 2005 but didn’t get stateside until this year.

Under the Influence of Giants – Got Nothing (Under the Influence of Giants)
Can you say Bee Gees? Pop rock sensibilities with an R&B feel plus vocals that recall the Bee Gees. And you will not find any of their influences as a surprise…The Bee Gees, Prince, and WHAM! Even if Wham is an influence do make that general knowledge?

Ray LaMontagne – Gone Away From Me (Till the Sun Turns Black)
Compared to Van Morrisson and Otis Redding; influenced by Stephen Stills, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell; labeled and mislabeled as Americana, folk, country, R&B, and “mountain soul”; a great cd.

The Ditty Bops – Moon Over the Freeway (Moon Over the Freeway)
Two women who went a bike tour to raise awareness for Pedals for Progress and Adventure Cycle Association. Check out their website to see how the tour went at dittybops.com. This is cd number two.

Tunng – Man In The Box (Comments of the Inners Chorus)
They are being labeled folktronica they have the warmth and charm of nu-folk but blend it nicely with beeps and samples. 7 guys from the UK. On tour now on the “twisted folk” tour all over Europe.

Yeah yeah yeahs – Gold Lion (Acoustic) (iTunes sessions EP)
Artsy NYC garage rock trio slow things down with an acoustic version of Gold Lion but it still stays sexy and dangerous. Kind of like Karen O so really that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

The Drams – Hummalong (Jubilee Dive)
In 2005 Texas band and favorite of mine played their last show. I have been waiting for the ashes to rise and finally they have. Three former members Slobberbone join together with two outsiders to form The Drams. Slobberbone were a great muddy boots bar band with this new outfit they have moved a bit to the poppier side of life(slightly and plus he almost sounds happy—not sure I like that part). I miss me my Slobberbone but The Drams are sounding good enough for me.

A special treat for making it this far. Iconoclasts on Sundance channel. Eddie Vedder and Laird hamilton.
