Next week 28

a music blog from a Next listener. You can listen tonight at 1071thepeak.com. Wednesday at 11pm and it repeats on Sundays at 8pm. Snapple sponsors NEXT so a big thank you to them. You need to get to the bottom of this post. Really.

The playlist for NEXT at 107.1 The Peak.

Joseph Arthur – Too Much To Hide (Nuclear Daydream)
the first rock-oriented act on Gabriel’s Real World label.
An accomplished painter too

John Mayer – Slow Dancing In A Burning Room
3rd cd of white guy laid back bluesy tunes—file this one under dinner tunes.

The Splendid Nobodies – Everything’s All Right (Strange Trip)
From Boston-- sophomore cd. It’s the blues-meets-rockabilly sound

Arctic Monkeys – Put Your Dukes Up John (Leave Before The Lights Come On EP)
Followup ep to Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, walked away with England's prestigious Mercury Music Prize (think our grammy) earlier this year. It was also the fastest-selling debut album in U.K. music history.

The Yayhoos – Roam (Put The Hammer Down) (B-52s)
From the ashes of Georgia Satelittes and Steve Earles the backup band the Dukes comes the second cd from the Yayhoos. Loud, smart, catchy rock and roll.

The Rakes – Work, Work, Work (Capture/Release)
It all began 3 years ago in college or university as it is know in the UK when two blokes met and wanted to start a band. They met 2 more blokes and the rest they say is history. They music is a bit of the stranglers meshed with The Strokes. Pretty straight forward punk. This is their first full length. It was released in the uk in 2005 but didn’t get stateside until this year.

Under the Influence of Giants – Got Nothing (Under the Influence of Giants)
Can you say Bee Gees? Pop rock sensibilities with an R&B feel plus vocals that recall the Bee Gees. And you will not find any of their influences as a surprise…The Bee Gees, Prince, and WHAM! Even if Wham is an influence do make that general knowledge?

Ray LaMontagne – Gone Away From Me (Till the Sun Turns Black)
Compared to Van Morrisson and Otis Redding; influenced by Stephen Stills, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell; labeled and mislabeled as Americana, folk, country, R&B, and “mountain soul”; a great cd.

The Ditty Bops – Moon Over the Freeway (Moon Over the Freeway)
Two women who went a bike tour to raise awareness for Pedals for Progress and Adventure Cycle Association. Check out their website to see how the tour went at dittybops.com. This is cd number two.

Tunng – Man In The Box (Comments of the Inners Chorus)
They are being labeled folktronica they have the warmth and charm of nu-folk but blend it nicely with beeps and samples. 7 guys from the UK. On tour now on the “twisted folk” tour all over Europe.

Yeah yeah yeahs – Gold Lion (Acoustic) (iTunes sessions EP)
Artsy NYC garage rock trio slow things down with an acoustic version of Gold Lion but it still stays sexy and dangerous. Kind of like Karen O so really that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

The Drams – Hummalong (Jubilee Dive)
In 2005 Texas band and favorite of mine played their last show. I have been waiting for the ashes to rise and finally they have. Three former members Slobberbone join together with two outsiders to form The Drams. Slobberbone were a great muddy boots bar band with this new outfit they have moved a bit to the poppier side of life(slightly and plus he almost sounds happy—not sure I like that part). I miss me my Slobberbone but The Drams are sounding good enough for me.

A special treat for making it this far. Iconoclasts on Sundance channel. Eddie Vedder and Laird hamilton.

More later
