Details on Pink Floyd at Live 8

The details of Pink Floyd's reunion at the London Live 8 show on Saturday (July 2, 2005) are leaking out. Organizer Bob Geldof said at a press conference in Italy last week that the reunited Floyd will be the next-to-last act in Hyde Park, and that they'll do four songs in their 15 minutes onstage. However, the UK newspaper The Sunday Times quoted Geldof as saying Pink Floyd will play "Breathe" from The Dark Side Of The Moon, "Comfortably Numb" from The Wall, and the title track from Wish You Were Here. It will be the first time singer-bassist Roger Waters performs with singer-guitarist David Gilmour, keyboardist Rick Wright, and drummer Nick Mason since 1981.

Decent article on Jack FM. I am sure you have one in your neighborhood now. Best line is actually hiring djs that know how to introduce you to new artists. Duh. But that would be too risky because you might actually hear something you don't like. Radio is way too safe now and just doesn't want to offend. Strangely because it is so boring it has offended. Well me at least.

Now I know the difference between gold and brass

Village Voice op ed on indie rock of 2005. Metacritc's top 30 of 2005 so far.

Let the opinions start...now.
AFI just released they 100 greatest quotes from a movie. It's not a bad list but just off the top of my head...
"I want you to hold the chicken between your knees" from Five Easy Pieces,
"this isn't Russia, Danny... is this Russia?" from Caddyschack; and
"it's the one that says 'bad motherfucker'" from Pulp Fiction or at least something from Taratino.
Or one of my all time favs---"InconCEIVable!"
or how about "it really tied the room together"?
Please feel free to leave a few of your favs too.
oh oh and how about "Aren't you gonna take your skates off?I never take my skates off."
or how about "I know we've only known each other for 4 weeks and 3 days, but to me it seems like 9 weeks and 5 days. The first day seemed like a week, and the second day seemed like 5 days, and the third day seemed like a week again, and the fourth day seemed like 8 days, and the fifth day, you went to see your mother, and that seemed ... just like a day. But then you came back, and then later, on the sixth day in the evening, when we saw each other, that started seeming like 2 days. So in the evening it seemed like 2 days, spilling over into the next day, and that started seeming like 4 days. So at the end of the sixth day, on into the seventh day, it seemed like a total of 5 days. And the sixth day seemed like a week and a half. ... I have it written down, I can show it to you tomorrow if you want to see it."
and I will finish with:
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

In the NYT's today there was an article and it posted the wrong URL
I feel bad for the anonymous author of the blog The Shins Will Change Your Life. You get lucky and score a high profile place in a New York Times article and the writer screws up your URL. There go all those hits. There goes your A-List status on Blogebrity.Leading into his article on The Believer's recent "music edition, NYT writer Kelefa Sanneh profiles The Shins Will Change Your Life site, calling it "one of the funniest and meanest "music-criticism blogs" and then gives the address: indierock4eva.blogpost.com. the site they printed was wrong. The right site is indie rock 4eva.

Hype goggles. How do hyped up indie bands stand up after the buzz wears off?

A bit ago I chatted up London's upcoming "Don't Look Back" concert series, which will feature bands performing classic albums in their entirety. At the time, only two shows had been announced - Belle and Sebastian playing If You're Feeling Sinister and Mudhoney playing Superfuzz Bigmuff. Hers's the rest:
8.30 The Stooges - Fun House - Carling Apollo Hammersmith
9.15 The Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray - Shepherd's Bush Empire
9.16 Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early singles - Koko
9.17 Múm/Cat Power - Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is OK/The Covers Album - Barbican Hall
9.21 Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Orange - Koko
9.24 Gang of Four - Entertainment! - Barbican Hall
9.25 Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister - Barbican Hall
10.05 Dirty Three/Sophia - Ocean Songs/The Infinite Circle - Barbican Hall

Cow fights man in pasture. Wonderful.

Women and booze equals...well funny/sexy photos.

Did you miss me?

Thanks for lying. If nothing else that makes me feel better and in turn that should make you feel better knowing that you made me feel better. But I know your lying so I will only be faking my feeling of better so you better pretend too. My logic is at times dizzy.

I will tell of my trip to Spain soon--- let me simply say that the US gov't should really rethink a few things. First the joy of the topless backstroke. Whoever invented that deserves a special place in heaven. Second ,or is it B, Absinthe. Maybe because I can't get it in the US makes the "drunk" feeling that much more pleasing. I am not faking it this time. It is a wonderful buzz. Although I now take it back the US should still outlaw those things because that will keep Europe special... and we all like to be special. Like I said more later. a few links for you now.

I love this...Pure Genius and I don't throw that phrase around nilly or willy. An open letter to Kansas School System.

Warning stop drinking now or risk blowing it out the nose. The onion 2056. I love the Female Dolphin President Question. How cool would that be?

The Phallic Logo Awards.

Mommy the Eldersburg Weatherman is scaring me.

Tom Cruise Kills Oprah. It only takes about 30 seconds of your life and it's kinda a Star Wars link too.

Ever wonder or argue after a few Absinthe's how much it would cost be like Bruce. Batman. The Forbes tries to answer this question.

Ever wonder when you should throw it out. Real Simple gives you a guide.

Do you love Paris in the Spring time? At least this guy has a bigger rack.

File-Sharing Continues to Increase, Big Yearly Gains

P2P file-sharing levels continue to grow, with new figures from NPD Group showing some robust increases. According to the recent report, total file-sharing volume in March ramped up to 242 million songs, a 25% increase compared to the same period in 2004. That is a significant climb, especially in the face of repeated RIAA lawsuits against individual file-sharers. Meanwhile, paid downloads also showed solid increases, with NPD reporting a total of 25.9 million transactions for the month. That is a 52% increase over the equivalent month in 2004, though overall volume has only recently developed into something meaningful.
While the NPD numbers show a clear increase, measuring P2P traffic is a tricky science. Most firms report that file-sharing levels are steadily increasing, though a flood of spoofed files could be artificially pumping volume considerably. To avoid this problem, P2P tracking authority BigChampagne normally uses unique users, which offers a more reliable gauge of file-sharing activity. According to the most recent BigChampagne data, average simultaneous global users hit 8.7 million in May, a jump of nearly 19 percent over the same month last year.

Welcome Pezman...just don't use my toothbrush and if you finish the milk be sure to buy a new gallon.
More later, HP

I feel stupid and contagious

Greetings all, thanks for the intro cbro. I’m Pezman, the new third member of A Glorious Mess, and yes, I did drag my feet a bit in joining. Sure contributing to the blog could be a great creative, and possibly even cathartic, outlet and letting loose with the occasional, hopefully witty, rant seems like a fun idea. However, having to do so on a regular basis seems an awful lot like a commitment and I’m under the strictest doctors’ orders to avoid commitment at all costs. It’s sad, especially considering what a commitment-hound I am, but such is my condition. Besides having failed to comply with their trinity of more outrageous requests (eating healthier, drinking less, getting some exercise) I felt I should follow at least one piece of their advice.*

Fortunately that hoopy frood cbro has assured me that the blog is no needy girlfriend. I won’t be required to check in on a regular basis or spend X amount of time a week updating (in this case X = minimum amount of face time required to avoid the “where are we going?” speech). Instead I can pop in when the mood strikes me, let loose my creative seed, then not give the blog another thought until the urge strikes me again. Like an ideal relationship.

Have I mentioned that I’m still single?

Well I hate to cut this rant short, but I still have some home repairs I need to address. But before I go I will share this little known plumbing fact. When the water leaves your tub it’s vitally important that it goes down the drainpipe rather than just splashing about inside the wall space. Seems trivial, but trust me, the people who live below you will notice if that’s not the case.

So I’m off to buy more duct tape, but I’ll be back. Have a good time in Spain cousin!

*Not that the AMA ever listens to my advice. I have yet to find a doctor who will take seriously my cholesterol/ blood pressure buddy system. My theory is that it’s fine to have one that is outrageously high provided the other is equally elevated. That is to say you can have all the cholesterol you want flowing through your arteries, you just have to keep it moving too fast to settle anywhere. So if you’re going to have that second order of french fries just be sure to salt the hell out of them.

New Member

I am off soon but wanted to quickly introduce Pezman to the blog officially. He has been hanging out in the periphery and has finally decided (after much begging on my part) to join our merry blog. We are now three. Well two until I get back. Then we are three.

I have always enjoyed his rants and hopefully you will too. So Pezman--Here we are now...entertain us.

Welcome.

Commitment-phobic co-dependents rejoice! Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, out June 7 on Lakeshore Records, is the album of and for dysfunctional relationships. Following the film's story of a married couple who lead double lives as spies - and have been hired to kill each other - the album mirrors the passion and tension between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with a choice selection of love and anti-love songs.
The love/hate relationship is played out on the album with a mix of classic, unreleased and exclusive songs. The classics include the J. Geils Band anthem "Love Stinks," Poison's "Nothin' But A Good Time," Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" (Pitt sings along to the latter in the film's climactic car chase). Consisting of 17 tracks, the album contains all the songs from the film's most memorable moments, including the scorching sex scene between Pitt and Jolie, played out to Magnet's sensual cover of the classic Bob Dylan song "Lay, Lady, Lay." Add to this new covers of such timeless love songs as Modern English's "I Melt With You" (by contemporary French art-popsters Nouvelle Vague), countered with the over-the-top rendition of Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name" by Victory Records' exploding new metal/screamcore band Atreyu, and the album stands alone as the perfect summer-love party mix. 8 mm contribute an exclusive cover of "Nobody Does it Better," adding a woozy yet orchestral twist to the theme from the classic James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me," and the Voodoo Glow Skulls take on Guns N' Roses "Used to Love Her (But I had to Kill Her).

Radiohead have broken the silence over their new album. Thom Yorke has told nme.com sessions for their new album remind him of working on "Kid A". The band recently regrouped to start rehearsing and recording new songs for the follow-up to 2003's "Hail To The Thief".
The album, not due until next year, will be the band's seventh. Thom said that early sessions had seen the band changing the way they work, reminding him of the change between 1997 LP "OK Computer" and "Kid A". He said: "It's going well. It's a bit like "Kid A" - we're going through a period of change. But that's good. We'll get there".

Well, starting this October, that's just what they'll be, serving as the headlining act on the inaugural Xingolati Groove Cruise. The event, aboard the Carnival Paradise liner, is a four-day jaunt from Los Angeles to Ensenada, Mexico, where the ship will be transformed into a floating music festival

Shame on you--you've got no sense of grace

Finally saw Star Wars ROTS. I liked it. I liked it alot. Let's put it this way...I wasn't disappointed and I am of the age that grew up on Star Wars and it was wonderful to see how Darth Vader became Darth Vader. So for Vader I give you a dj doing what a dj does. Or this one. DJ Daft Fader.

Worst ad song ever. They bring up some great points. Good read from Slate.

Indie is cool but doesn't always pay the bills so a few indie labels have joined forces. A2IM. Will they stay cool? They do want a presence on the Hill in DC. Death knell?

Blabbermouth reports:
Tune in at TheRockRadio.com this Sunday June 5, 2005 as the original GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler, now on the road with his band ADLER'S APPETITE, talks about Axl Rose, how the singer threatened to kill him, the long-overdue "Chinese Democracy" album, drug addiction in the GUNS N' ROSES camp and why he was thrown out of the band.
"Axl ruins it not for himself and for the rest of us (Slash, Izzy, Duff, Steven) but he ruins it for the fans. We all know he is great but he has his moments, well lots of moments... he's a jackass basically, a fucking weirdo, and he can kiss my ass" says Alder.
About "Chinese Democracy": "If he puts it out he thinks he'll sell 20 million copies. Well, maybe he's lucky if he goes gold. There's no hits on it, it's crap."

Rock on with your bad self

I was a the Queens Of The Stone Age/Interpol show friday. Note to concertgoers...don't hit Josh Homme with a shoe...he will seek you out and make you look like an ass, good stuff.

Well, this week should see Coldplay sell a gazillion records, meanwhile the White Stripes also have a record coming out. Don't expect Elephant II.
(notice my use of the term "Record" instead of "CD", so old school of me)

The Brits have chosen their favorite song of all time. And the winner is...."Wonderwall" by Oasis. Hmmm...conspiracy? How convenient that their album comes out on the same day as the announcement? Virgin Radio listeners chose the Gallagher Brothers' ditty over the following which placed second through tenth:
2. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
3. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
4. The Beatles - Let It Be
5. John Lennon - Imagine
6. The Police - Every Breath You Take
7. The Jam - Going Underground
8. Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
9. Robbie Williams - Angels
10. The Stranglers - Golden Brown

"Let It Be" isn't even the best Beatles song off that record..and where is Bowie on this list?

There's something enjoyable about making music with bouncing kitten heads.

I found N,B,X,6 to have a cool groove to it.

Local club Double Door may be forced to close...
THE WAR ON CULTURE:
LANDLORD WANTS TO SHUT DOWN WICKER PARK'S DOUBLE DOOR

On June 9, 2005 Double Door, Chicago's preeminent small music venue, will be fighting for its very existence before Cook County Chancery Judge Billik. The trial, whereby Double Door is seeking to enforce anextension to its lease, is set to begin at 2PM at the Cook County Courthouse, Room 2601 in the Daley Center. The trial hinges upon Double Door's position that it appropriately notified the owners of thebuilding, Harry and Brian Strauss, of its intention to exercise itsoption in its lease. The Strauss' dispute this claim. Double Door has become a fixture in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhoodand an integral part of the cultural and music scene in Chicago since it's opening in 1994. The club has played host to some of the biggest bands in the world including The Rolling Stones, bringing national and international exposure to Chicago. Double Door served as the site for debut material from two albums of Chicago's own Smashing Pumpkins. Artists like Kid Rock, Macy Gray, The Strokes and The Killers have all graced the Double Door stage early in their careers. The club has nurtured the careers of many of Chicago's most successful local artists including Chevelle, Local H and Liquid Soul. The Strauss family has no interest in preserving the cultural integrityof the neighborhood or the Double Door. It is their intention to force the closure of Double Door and to replace it with a national retail chain.Double Door filed its suit against the Strauss family knowing that it has met its obligations under the lease. This trial will determine whether the institution that is Double Door will remain a fixture in Wicker Park and a key part of the cultural and musical scene in Chicago. Chicago's musical landscape will not be the same without Double Door.
