Review of U2's first show on tour:
U2 have made their live return in SAN DIEGO with a show that reached far back into their archives.
The band played the 14,000 capacity San Diego Sports Arena in front of a devoted sell-out crowd – several hundred of whom had been queuing for over 24 hours.
The two-hour 22-song set saw several tracks drawn from recent album 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' but had the crowd particularly excited with those taken from 'Boy' - U2's 1980 debut.
The Vertigo tour had been due to begin in Miami on March 1 but was postponed due to illness.
“San Diego turned out to be the best place to kick this off,” said Bono close to the show's conclusion.
Playing on a small circular stage bordered with a wide runway - similar to that they employed on 2001's 'Elevation' tour - U2 opened with 'City Of Blinding Lights', replete with a large curtain-of-lights backdrop and tickertape raining down from the ceiling.
The band also worked through a selection of their classics. 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)' and 'Bullet The Blue Sky'.
Rich Wiseburg from Florida travelled across the US to see the show and had been outside for almost 14 hours in order to secure his place at the front.
He told NME.COM: “I've seen them 35 to 40 times and no-one in the world can touch them. I'm going to see them seven times on this tour.”
The setlist ran:
'City Of Blinding Lights'
'Vertigo'
‘Cry/Electric co’
‘An Cat Dubh’
‘Into The Heart’
‘Beautiful Day’
‘New Year's Day’
‘Miracle Drug’
‘Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own’
‘Love And Peace or Else’
‘Bullet The Blue Sky’
‘Running To Stand Still’
‘Zoo Station’
‘The Fly’
‘Elevation’
‘Pride (In The Name Of Love)’
‘Where The Streets Have No Name’
‘One’
‘All Because Of You’
‘Yahweh’
‘40’
