Old Guys can still bring the Rock

The Dude is 50. The Dude is still creative. The Dude has my April CD of the Month

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Larzarus, Dig!!!

Picking up where his wonderful and painfully ignored Grinderman project left off but that shouldn't be much of a surprise since the man himself is painfully ignored on the radio. I will gladly admit that he is not for everyone. You might need to "dive in" and immerse yourself in the cd for awhile. Let it wash over you. Dare I say marinate yourself in NICK and his Bad Seeds. Enjoy the uncomfortable and the grandness and the intelligence. I mentioned Grinderman...here is a taste

This is his 14th studio album and if you don't know The Prince of Darkness from Down Under it is time to expand your cd collection. At a time when Paul is just skating by so that he can pay for divorce court this man will blow your mind. In a good way.

Enjoy the adventure. Plus the man was in Wings of Desire

a few cds that were close - that I thought about for CD of the Month were The Wood Brothers, Sun Kil Moon, and of course the Replacements Re-issues. Remember to get "Let it Be" if you only want to purchase one.

Gutter Twins as CD of the Month

Man I didn't realize that I was this far behind. So this was March's CD of the month. The Gutter Twins' "Saturnalia". Saturnalia is or was a Roman celebration. Started as a day but grew into a week long "party" of tomfoolery. Don't worry I didn't know what it was either.

Exit Afghan Whigs and Screaming Trees.
Sadly after the wonderful and glorious cd "1965" The Afghan Whigs called it quits in 2001. Greg Dulli did a solo CD and a few Twilight Singers CDs after that. Mark Lanegan was in Screaming Trees which also broke up after a stellar CD called "Dust". He went solo (great acoustic songs check them out people) and hung out with QOTSA. He then recorded with the Twilight Singers and Isobel Campbell.

Welcome to the Gutter Twins
A glorious collaboration between friends. Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli have also been collaborating since 2000 and Saturnalia has been rumored since 2003.

In September of 2005, Lanegan performed with Dulli in Italy as the Gutter Twins for the first time.

The MUSIC
It's more feeling and mood. It truly feels like music you would expect to find in a gutter or a movie about the lower rungs of life. Their voices play nicely off each other: Lanegan’s brooding baritone and Dulli’s mellow tenor muse on the absurdities of love and life. Mostly Love. This CD may take a few of you a few "listen throughs" but you will be rewarded with a rich experience and a CD you'll return to again and again.

Think I'm wrong? Think I'm right? Let me know. What is your CD of the Month?

Best of Feb 08

What a glorious month of music. In January - in 5 weeks of Tuesdays I handed out 10 Gold Stars to CDs. This month in just 4 Tuesdays...14 CDs get the Gold Star treatment. Now if I am truly honest with myself I will say that this CD of the month is out of a long time of wanting the the world to recognize Bob Mould(I think maybe Kelley Stotlz should have gotten it). What can I say...I have a soft spot for the man's music and he and his bands are one of the main people to blame for all that is Indie and Alternative in music today. Oh and if you ever get the chance you need to see him solo and acoustic. The man is simply amazing. If you think The Foo Fighter's "acoustic songs" are heavy, man you ain't heard nothing yet.

Anyway Congrats to Bob Mould for my CD on the month. I think we can call this one a comeback. He pretty much throws in ever style that he has ever recorded and put it together on this disc. There are the sonic assults with and without acoustic guitars and the bleeps of the DJing too but this time a bit more in the background (mostly). It's his kitchen sink cd and it works. Welcome back Uncle Bob. I've missed you.

Also check out his great Blog too.

There are a serious 7 or 8 CDs that should be in your collection from this month music lovers. Happy shopping.

CD of the month of Jan '08

It was a good first month of the year. Drive By Truckers. Close. Marah. Even closer. Vampire Weekend. There you go. CD of the month.

The internet darlings are turning this thing into something good. They are number 17 on the charts and still selling. Since they are selling so many cds I am sure all the internet blogs will be turning their collective backs on them soon (if not already). Maybe even claiming sellout. Too bad really. I said it before and I know I'll say it again that even this early in the year this could be a top ten cd.

One of my all time favs are Talking Heads and this band reminds me of them. Fun and serious and funky and rock(y) all playing together nicely and not one of them is running with scissors.

Cd of the Month for November

October rocked and really you might want to revisit those cds. It was a tough month to pick a "CD of the Month". This month was tough but for a different reason. This time not too much out there. To make it easy on myself I will choose the cd that contains my 2 year old's current favorite song. To hear her sing along to this song is beyond funny. Here's Tick Tick Boom and picture a wee little two year old girl "Singing" the Yeahs and loving the "BOOM" part.

It is a strong but not perfect cd. A few misses but a few brilliant strokes too.

Enjoy it all

Chuck Prophet's Soap and Water

CD of the month...I could have pick "Magic" the latest from Springsteen but that cd is already gold and on it's way to Platinum which is no small feat in this atmosphere. In fact, looking back at this month it was one hell of a good month for releases.

You might or might not know that Prophet started with the band "Green on Red" in the 80s. If not it wouldn't hurt you or your ears to check that band out. You might be saying to yourself how did this band slip past...everybody? Well make up for it now.

He is great and as a solo artist some of my favorite songs of the past decade have been played by him. If "Summertime Thing" does not make you happy and/or smile you are reading the wrong blog. Head over to some blog that is touting the joys of listening to Colbie Caillat (seriously I just don't get how she has shot up the charts - c'mon people your better than that.) and yes I know that "Summertime Thing" is on a different CD.

"Water and Soap" is a "forever" CD. A CD that you will listen to for the rest of your life. It's a CD of roots-rock by a sonic texturalist. It is Magic.
