My Top Albums of The Year.
After much deliberation I bring you what I considered the top releases for '06'.

(1) Wolfmother-Wolfmother
Saviors of rawk in 06. The self titled debut was flat out the most consistently rocking album all year. If my year had a soundtrack, Wolfmother was it.



(2) Band Of Horses-Everything All The Time
This album came out of nowhere and surprised me with its staying power. Melodic melodies mixed with a Neil Young meets Jim James vocal.




(3) My Morning Jacket-Okonokos
Speaking of Jim James, MMJ comes in at #3 with a live document of what makes this band so great. This double album is a testament to my declaration of MMJ being the best live band around at the moment.




(4) The Flaming Lips-At War With The Mystics
At times I thought I was the only person who liked this record, even Flaming Lips diehards were apparently disapointed in this effort. I disagree. This a fun Lips record, one that leaves you with giddy excitement akin to one of their live shows.




(5) Secret Machines-Ten Silver Drops
Secret Machines cement their place as a premier rock outfit.
I see only good things ahead for them.



(6) Drive By Truckers-A Blessing And A Curse
The Truckers once again do justice to southern rock. A nice collection of influences represented on this disc.



(7) Gnarls Barkley-St. Elsewhere
Besides the ubiquitos "Crazy" which seems to be universally recognized as the single of the year, St Elswhere shows the dynamic relationship between Cee-Lo & Dangermouse can produce the party record of '06'.




(8) Beck-The Information
Two good records in two years, Beck is on a roll. Once again he manages to combine various influences, at this point, most of his influences are of himself.




(9) The Black Keys-Magic Potion
While Jack White is out playing in a full band, The Black Keys keep the white boy blues flag waving with their most accomplished release to date.



(10) Jenny Lewis And The Watson Twins-Rabbit Fur Coat
Putting Rilo Kiley on hold, Jenny Lewis released her first solo disc with the help of the Watson Twins. This one snuck up on me towards the end of the year.

In the round at a small venue with the bombastic sound of the Secret Machines.

Pearl Jam at the United Center, Chicago 5/16 & 5/17
I will be the first to say this tour was not as stellar as the '00' or '03' or '05' tours, but for a band like PJ, they will always belong in the elite of live acts.

Flaming Lips at Langerado Music Festival, Sunrise Florida 3/11
The most fun humanly possible at a live show. The Lips are still trancendent.

Wolfmother at Lollapalooza, Chicago 8/5
A coming out party for a great new band.

Merry New Year and more

I wouldn't be around for awhile. I'll try to remember to post the second half of the best of NEXT for Wednesday. I am sure between HM and Megs you'll be in good hands. And speaking of NEXT this Sunday is New Year's eve and thus the radio stations countdown so....they moved the encore presentation of “Next” to 11AM on Monday so as not to interfere with the countdown

In Memory of Greatness

It's hard to believe that on this day four years ago, we lost one of the most important figures in rock'n roll history. Sure The Beatles matter. so does Elvis. But the only band that ever did "matter" was The Clash.

I still have this memory of being seventeen years old in the back seat of my parents' car...we're on our way to do some christmas shopping and my dad says to me "Hey Meg, who was the punk band that covered 'I Fought the Law'?" I responded, "The Clash, why do you want to know?" My dad said "I think somebody from that band died." I asked if he knew who it was and he didn't. (figures!) I thought to myself "Please don't let it be Joe. Let it be Mick or someone else in the band." I'll be honest, I'm not much of a Mick Jones fan... sure big audio dynamite is cool, but Joe Strummer is cooler.

When I got home from christmas shopping that afternoon, I turned on the TV to CNN and it was confirmed that Joe died of a heart attack. I cried. My mother thought I was being melodramatic, but she never grew up listening to The Clash and didn't understand the possibility of a Clash reunion. (Since the Smiths are never going to reunite, my hopes were for a Clash reunion!) My parents now try to be hip and claim that they listened to The Clash back in the early 80s, which cracks me up very much, because I know that they didn't listen to them until I started listening.

To say the least Christmas 2002 was a blue one. I couldn't believe that one of my heroes had died. Losing Joey Ramon was tough as it was, but losing Joe Strummer was even worse.

To make things even more difficult, we lost him right before the Iraq war. I still wonder what sort of music he would have made during the times of the Iraq war. If The Clash had reunited, what would have happened? It's hard to tell. I have a feeling Mr. Strummer would have given Blair and Bush a serious piece of his mind.

The Clash was one of those bands that got me into punk rock when I was 10 or 11 years old. For me, my idea of punk at the age of 10 was The Clash, Sex Pistols and The Ramones. I remember hearing "London Calling" when I was in the 6th grade and it changed my life. Punk rock and the whole d.i.y. asthetic to make possitive change in the world is what saved my life and turned me towards being an activist and being politically active. I have always looked up to Joe Strummer because he wrote clever, passionate songs and had the guts to say things that not many people had the guts to say.

Even though Mr. Strummer is gone, we still have the music thank god! Not to mention, his passion for humanity and music is still around. This video for his cover of "Redemption Songs" sums it up I think.



Now don't mind me, but I'll be decorating my family's christmas tree while blasting London Calling very loudly.

PS- This past summer when I got my new golden retriver puppy, I named him Rudy after the ska reference and two of my favorite songs "A Message to You Rudy" by Dandy Livingstone (later covered by the Specials) and "Rudy Can't Fail" by The Clash. His full registered name with the AKC is Rudy Vennett Strummer. (and yes I call him Rude boy sometimes)

Jeff Tweedy performed and auctioned off a concert where he would come and perform at your house for you and your friends...it ended up in a three way tie with 3 people obviously representing a collective of obsessed Wilco fans, he agreed to do all three for $17,500 each. $52,500 to charity just like that.
Later Steve Albini and Shellac performed and auctioned off a day of studio time w/ Albini, I not sure how much that went for.
In between was some pretty inspired improv and everyone seemed to have a good time for a good cause.

I suppose I should join the "Best Of List" fray on my next post, Cbro shall I go first?

Former front man of Crooked Finger goes Self-recorded, Nebraska-style, in a hotel room on the North Carolina coastline, To The Races more often evokes Iron & Wine than Springsteen

Pete Yorn – Maybe I’m Right (Nightcrawler)
Like most artist there are bunch of songs that didn’t make the record… Well there's a batch of them that have become a six song EP called Westerns which are kind of more country leaning songs that I was exploring during the period over the last three years. And there's another batch that is ten songs that is another record that is not released yet that I'm just putting together that is kind of a concept record that is based on a character from a movie that I like a lot.

Matthew Ryan – Everybody Always Leaves (From a Late Night High Rise)
Given that Ryan began writing the album shortly after the death of a close friend and the sentencing of his brother to 30 years in prison, the sorrowful tone of the album comes as no surprise...not to worry though as the lyrics do include hope as a main feature. The best songs are the subdued uptempo ones.

Rocco DeLuca and the Burden – Swing Low (I Trust You to Kill Me)
More than just a cool name. They sound kind of like Physical Graffiti to sound like if Jeff Buckley recorded it. The first band to be signed onto Kiefer Sutherland's back-to-basics Ironworks records

Duels – Potential Futures (The Bright Lights and What I should Have Learned)
Duels' greatest strength lies is in creating big, synth rockers that make you want to jump around you living room, provided no-one is watching, of course. Good not great and hopefully a stepping stone to that great album. This song was there first single but they re-recorded it for this album.

The Decemberists – Summersong (The Crane Wife)
As far as full albums go front to back this may be their best. Strangely as far as songs go they have done so much better. If this major label release has done nothing but get you to listen to their back catalogue then the job was done and done well. Oh and this cd is in my top ten.

Homework = Distractions

I should be working on my homework, which entails an essay about the passion of the christ (it's for my pop culture journalism class), reading and a slight assignment for astronomy (not due until Tuesday), my part of a group paper for my relationships and dating class (yes that's a real class believe it or not), but I have too much floating around in my head to concentrate. I figured that I'd clear my thoughts by writing on here...

First of all, I have a really cool announcement! This month is going to be the release of the first issue of the Backbone Mountain Review, which is a literature magazine showcasing Western Maryland writers. So you're probably wondering what is the big deal... Well, my poem "October" was selected for publication. Aside from being published in Frostburg State University's lit magazine when I was a student there and on the staff, this is really my first hit into a rather important publication. I am being published along side award winning professors and writers. I found out that there was an overwhelming response to get into the magazine, so surprisingly, I actually made it into something based on writing talent. for more information, here is the link: backbone mountain review . Maybe I'll post a few poems on here. Granted, I'll leave you all to decide that one!

Now onto other things, for my pop culture of journalism class, I have to write a 1,500 word paper/essay that is evaluating the press' coverage of a trend or a figure from pop culture. It can be from the past or even something recent. I'm not sure if I have to stick to American press only. The paper would also include my opinions on not just the press and media, but my opinion of my topic. So far, I have a few ideas, but I feel like there's got to be much more stuff. Here's my ideas thus far:

1. Madonna- Easy one, I know! I was going to focus around the eras of 1990-1995. When she was extremely racey and out there. My professor suggested writing about the SEX coffee table book, but I'm not sure if A. I can find a copy of the book and B. If I have the guts to actually look through the damn thing. Don't get me wrong, I love Madonna, but I'd rather write on her music and the truth or dare movie. One a Side Note- I was thinking about doing a comparision between Madonna and Kylie's music from 1997 to now. It's like they're stealing from each other.

2. Morrissey- This might be tricky if I can only use the American Media. Then again, maybe I can do a comparission between American and the UK's coverages. We all love the smiths and his solo work is really good when he's depressed and trying not to fall in love. I saw this really great documentary on youtube about Moz. There's all these theories about him and not to mention, he's one of the most influential voices in the past 20 years in terms of alternative rock and pop music.

3. Straight Edge- I thought an essay on the subculture would be interesting. So many people think straight edge kids are violent towards those who drink, smoke, whatever. But I am one to prove people wrong. I am straight edge and to me, there's a lot towards it than just the minor threat song. I know that it has recieved some bad press in the past too.

4. Emocore- It might be hard to research but the misconcept of what emotional hardcore is, is something that bothers me to this day. I hate the whole thing of labeling everything as "emo" that's like calling everything back in 1994 "grunge." This topic would be cool because I love the history of the DC Hardcore scene and I know a lot about the music from the 1990s (ie- sunday real estate, jawbreaker, get up kids, jimmy eat world, promise ring, ect).

5. David Bowie- I think we all know the possitives of doing a paper on him, but the issue is how difficult will the research be? Nothing like him has come to America. I mean nobody ever saw such androgeny during his "Ziggy Stardust" days. I can't think of anyone who has his sound or looks. He is probably one of the ultimate definitions of cool.

6. Prince- Once again another weird figure in music. Weird, but totally awesome. I love watching Purple Rain. I grew up on his music and I remember people find the whole "artist formerly known as" to be quite funny. I just wonder what sort of things could I find in the press.

My list is kinda long, but in a way, it's not. I need to find something where it wouldn't be like writing a damn book, even though someday I'll probably write a book about all sorts of pop cultural topics. I feel like there is probably something much cooler to write about even. So, if you have any better ideas or any suggestions, please speak up! It could be about a movie, a book, music, art, ect. Also, if any of those six ideas sound good, tell me which one you think I should do. I'll most likely post the essay on here.

On an ending note, I am curious to know what album you are listening to that isn't new or current.

Right now, I am listening to Oasis' Definitely Maybe. This is the one Oasis album I have yet to hear in its entirety until today. I now see why they could have been "The Next Beatles." Noel Gallagher is not only a great guitar player, but man can he write good pop songs. I already knew this, but sometimes you forget just how great something is. Just recently, I saw an interview with Noel and he was going on about how he loves Johnny Marr and the Smiths. I can definately hear some of those influences on their first album. It must be a Manchester thing. (I am crazy about the music history of Manchester and the whole "madchester" sound)
