A Helping Hand

I am not sure if you remember Bob Woodruff but you'll be seeing a lot of the Woodruffs on TV over the next few days.

They are dear friends. Their marriage, their family, their strength, is an inspiration to me. And they are telling a story about veterans that deserves our attention. Below is a note that explains it all.

Dear Friends:

It has been slightly over one year since a bomb literally blew apart ourlives when Bob was critically injured by an IED in Iraq. Our year has been hellish, and yet we consider ourselves infinitely fortunate as Bob continues to exceed all expectations for recovery. As you may know, Bob and I have written a book called In An Instant. It's about our journey over this past year and reflects back to our earlier life together as a couple and family.

It also sheds some light on the kind of trauma that so many families with loved ones returning from Iraq with life changing injuries are enduring. Though the book publicity will momentarily shine the spotlight on ourselves, it is all for a good cause as we hope to use the opportunity to engage in some grassroots guerilla marketing. While Bob was medically sedated in Bethesda Naval Hospital, I saw more suffering than I could have ever imagined. Young mothers, separated from their children for weeks, waiting by the bedside of their injured husbands; men in the ICU next to Bob dying, their families hunched in grief. Sometimes there were soldiers with no one to visit them, alone in their rooms, trying to make sense of how one minute they were with their buddies and the next they are waking up without a limb or so addled they could no longer read or speak. And as awful as the first weeks of recovery are for the patients and families, the difficulties they facefor long-term rehabilitation are equally challenging.

In addition to the book launch, on February 27th at 10:00 PM, Bob will report "To Iraq and Back" on ABC- a documentary about his personal struggle with traumatic brain injury and that of other soldiers. It will be a sobering look at what injured service men and women experience when they return from war and, sadly how many of them are not as fortunate as Bob. No matter what your feelings are about the war in Iraq, these young people served their country and Bob and I would like to help them get the highest level of care necessary to regain their health, support their families, and return to as normal a life as possible.

The military medical teams are performing so many miracles, saving lives in record numbers, more than any war in history. But down the road, once they are discharged from their acute care situation many of the injured do not receive the long-term rehabilitative care that they need, in particular, the cognitive therapy is sometimes terribly inadequate or non-existent. To that end, our family has created the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury (BWFF). We are committed to raising money for this important causeduring and after our book tour through special events and promotions. We will focus on donating to existing organizations that are helping all members of the military receive cognitive rehabilitation.

During the past year so many of you have reached out to our extended family and offered your support and assistance, and we are turning back to you now to help the men and women from the military that need your support. Beginning February 27th you can log on to http://bobwoodrufffamilyfund.org/ to learn about our mission, and consider making a donation. You can also pre-order the book today online at Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Aportion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to BWFF.

We have also included a media schedule of our national television appearances and book signings below. We would be grateful if you would forward this email onto interested family and friends and hopefully encourage them to help us with our fundraising goals.

Yours, Lee and Bob Woodruff

Norah Jones likes it on top. Back to the number one spot on the charts.

Vinyl still pressing on
.

and in case you ever wondered Part one of two. How an LP is made.

Surprise...delay on new Guns N' Roses CD.

(PR) The press has spoken, music fans have responded and the numbers are in. Three-time Grammy Award winning artist Lucinda Williams’ new album West (Lost Highway) debuts at #14 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart, making it her highest debut in over two decades of making music. West scanned 57, 452 copies in its first week, making this Lucinda’s highest sales week ever. Her previous high points were in 2003 when her Grammy-nominated album World Without Tears debuted at #18 and sold 53,783 copies in it’s first week.

NEXT WEEK 44

Last night at 11. I hope you were listening. If not catch the rebroadcast(Sunday night at 8) of NEXT with Chris Bro-- NEXT is 107.1 The Peak's new music show brought to you by Snapple.

Due to a very silly, I dare say stupid rule/law I can not list my playlist in order. Any questions please just email me.

WEEK 44
Keller Williams with Michael Franti – Ninja of Love (Dream)
Williams' objective to create an album that he "would be proud to crank in [his] pimped-out golf cart when [he is] 80." Dream was all about recording with his Dream Team which includes Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. Michael Franti of Spearhead. How about Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten or the String Cheese Incident? Check. Check. and Check.
Sorry I could only find an acoustic live version without Franti.

Bloc Party – Hunting for Witches (A Weekend In The City)
True there are no “Banquet” moments on this cd but it still burns. They are currently touring Europe and doing quite well on the charts even here in the States. Number 2 in the UK, Ireland, Japan and Australia. Number 12 here.

Or if you'd rather a slide show with the studio recording.

The Broken West – Down In The Valley (I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On)
The Kinks, Big Star, and The Byrds are obvious touchstones…that should be enough for you to go out and buy this cd. Formed in 2004 and have release one other EP besides this there first full length.

Loney, Dear – hard Days 1.2.3.4 (Loney, Noir)
the first North American release from Swedish multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanangen. I’ve heard this cd described as a one night stand. uncomplicated and easy to fall for, with no real thought or attachment necessary.

Eleni Mandell – Miss Me (Miracle of Five)
No longer a female Tom Waits she is in full on Billie Holiday mode. Sly and Sexy. One of my favorite cds right now.

Cat Power - Wonderwall (Peel Sessions) Cover of Oasis

Lucinda Williams – Wrap My Head Around That (West)
Since Lucinda Williams' last studio release, 2004's World Without Tears, she's buried her mother, endured a nasty split with an ex-lover, and gotten engaged to a long-lost acquaintance she hadn't seen for 15 years. Perfect setting for an amazing album. A mellow affair but certainly amazing.

The Cat Empire – Lullaby (Two Shoes)
From an Aussie jazz trio in 1999 into a sextet of great party tunes. Don’t look for a guitar in the mix but you’ll find everything else including your booty shaken not stirred.

Xavier Rudd – The Letter (Food In The Belly)
Channel me some Ben Harper please. After being released in Australia and Canada in 2005 and 2006, respectively, Xavier Rudd's Food In The Belly finally comes out Stateside in 2007

Amy Winehouse – You Know I’m No Good (Back to Black)
Signed at 19 and now 23 and on a crash course like a female version of Pete Doherty,. Be Careful around her as she is never afraid to say or sing her mind.

Beyond music this time

My new music show NEXT has a weekly newsletter now. If you'd like to join please click on the link below. Also if you know of other music loving folks pass on the information please. Thanks.

Rethinking Sting by Slate.

I just finished watching the Departed. Martin Scorsese will win for this. Why? Because like Denzel Washington the Academy will make up for all the years that he should have won and give him the Naked Man with Arms Crossed for a good(actually better than good) but not quite great movie and definitely not his best. Leo was awesome in it. Jack is too.

Surprise I finished a few books. The Long Tail and latest from Kurt Vonnegut "A Man With A Country". The Long Tail is very good read. Quick -- for a business book and eye opening. The Vonnegut book is a very, very quick read. He is not very happy either. In fact, beyond mad. Luckily the funny is still there.

Catching up on my DVR

and last night I was watching The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His guest was the Chef for the White Houses of Clinton and 4 years of Bush. Now I am not some great intelligentsia but when I heard that Bush's nickname for the Chef was "Cookie" I almost threw up. I mean if he was using up all his gray matter on say - the fixing of the War, or the educational gap between the world and US or maybe even getting our budget on the surplus side...I would give him a break. I would say something like "Hey, he is solving very difficult problems...he doesn't have time to come up with creative nicknames."
C'mon...seriously Dude you can do better than Cookie?!?
I am amazed that even after all his blunders he can still astound me. If we vote another Bush into the White House I swear I might leave. Vancouver here I come.

The Office We all love it.

If haven't watched it yet get it on DVD and catch up. I love this blog That's What She Said. A lawyer type goes through each episode and breaks down the lawsuits that could come up. Quite funny.

I hate when life

gets in the way. I have been way too busy. I guess that is good but it almost means that I have had almost no real free time. I hate that.

So the The Recording Industry has let the world know what it's thinking. Dixie Chicks come up big in the Grammys. More a statement in Politics then the record itself although very good not that good. They do deserve all this only because America in general or at least in the Red States did them wrong. The Best and worst of The Grammys including of course the Police getting back together for Roxanne.

and
Gigwise reports: Newly reformed Genesis have announced they will play a massive free concert for 400,000 fans in Rome this summer.
Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford will end their first tour in 15 years by playing the Circo Massimo on 14 July. I still don't know how I feel about PG not joining. In a way it would be very cool to Peter Gabriel back in the band he founded yet playing with Phil Collins? Probably right by not playing.

The Next Gen Player for MP3s. Hopefully soon.

Idlewind in stores in the UK only.

Remember your sugary sweet breakfast characters? Weel take a look see at this cartoon. Very cool. Breakfast of the Gods.

NEXT Week 42

Next is brought to you by Snapple. Listen tonight at 11 or the repeat on Sunday nights at 8. The iMix link will be at the bottom of this post.

Listen online at 1071thepeak.com

NEXT Week 42

Sloan – Another Way I could Do It (Never Hear the End of It)
I will get playing these guys from Canada until you wake up and start buying their cds. This is their 8th studio cd and contains 30 songs. It’s like a power pop version of The Minutemen’s Double Nickels on the Dime.

Norah Jones – Sinkin’ Soon (Not Too Late)
The Woman you probably want to hate but with every cd and every listen you find it impossible to do. I might be reading into things but I think this tune is about New Orleans. Simply put if you dig Norah Jones then you will find plenty to dig on this cd too.

The Early Years – The Simple Solution (The Early Years)
3 guys from the UK. This is cd was released in Europe in Sept of last year but just got to the States. For fans of Feedback and drones with a nice strong back beat. New EP coming out in Feb.

Fields – Brittlesticks (7 from the Village)
If we feel the need to pigeonhole I guess we could call them a very modern Crosby Stills and Nash. They are a 5 piece from London and working on their full length now which may be more Muse like then CSN ish if the rumors on the interwebs are true.

Youth Group – Forever Young (Casino Twilight Dogs)
From Sydney Australia. This is their third cd. Cover of an Alphaville song.

Husky Rescue – Diamonds in the Sky (Ghost is Not Real)
There is loud and soft on this album. Sometimes within the same song. This song washes over you. 2nd CD from this Finland band.

Paolo Nutini – Rewind (These Streets)
He is a very talented 20 year old from Scotland. He started singing in his school choir. He wanted to be a goalkeeper in football or as we call it Soccer but he couldn’t deny his singing talents.

Tin Hat – Dead Season (The Sad Machinery of Spring)
They used to be called Tin Hat Trio but when you add a permentant member of your group -- it’s time for a name change. So they dropped the Trio part of their name. Still jazzy and still cool though.

The Shins – Sea Legs (Wincing the Night Away)
They get on their inner Beck on this tune. Great CD and don't let anyone tell you any different.

Jesse Malin – Megan Don’t Know (Don’t Let Them Take Your Down EP)
Old punks don’t die they play alt-country music. New CD soon. On this 4 song EP is two tunes that wouldn't be on the ablum.

120 Days – Get Away (120 Days)
They are not afraid to go for it all. Great first cd full of keyboard-y dance rock. Or RAWK.

Well we did pretty good until the end there with the vids.

Still sad

but at least the Bears are in the NFL Norse divison and should be back in the playoffs the next few years. Even with Farve returning.

I still am happy for the Colts.

So when I was in Big Sur I got a new pair of Keen shoes. I love them. If Keen wants to send me another pair I will gladly say I love those too. It's easy to tell the truth. They are like urban hiking boots. They are made for the street but have a cool chunky feel and look.

I can not even begin to tell you happy this video makes me. I don't know how they got all of Cobra Kai but I love it and so will you. It's all things Karate Kid. or try this website devoted to KK and of course don't forget about the Wiki.

The future of music at Starbucks...I'll take a latte and beam me a new tune. Thanks Barista.

Great writings on music of 2006 and some not so great.

Bear Down

Chicago Bears. Who are the celeb's picking. Mostly the Colts. Silly Humans. Good Grossman not Evil Rex will show up along with the running game and that means bad things for the other team. Honestly I don't mind who wins. I want and think the Bears will win but I wouldn't mind if Harrison were to get a ring. Pure Class.

Just got back from Big Sur. If you've never been you have to go. No place like it -- not only in America but maybe the world. It is truly one of my favorite places. Stay at Deetjens too or at least have breakfast there. Also head to Esalen's at 1 am when they open up their hot springs to the general public. You do need reservations though so stop by and get a spot. Watch Good Morning America on Sunday to see the Big Sur Weekend Window.

What if God had a myspace?

As I said I was in Big Sur so here is last week's NEXT iMix.
