Welcome to this Glorious Mess: Like-minded individuals wandering this Great Big Green and Blue Ball called Earth together. Online. So welcome and enjoy.
Real name: Loretta Where I live: Oakland, NJ Occupation: Mom/Grandma/Hemodialysis Nurse/Retired Non Profit Director (Children/Families local NJ) Favorite movie: Under the Tuscan Sun Favorite book: The Phone Book Favorite album: American Beauty Grateful Dead Three famous people I'd like to meet: Colin Powell, Bruce Springsteen, Arlo Guthrie One famous person I actually met: Roger Maris Best concert experience: Pink Floyd Animals Tour the "old" Madison Square Garden...it's a bit blurry now.
Coolest pop-culture item I own: Hanging Vodka IV Bottle with M.A.S.H. logo, has tubing & clamp!
And what movie prop would like to own: The Lamp Post from "Singing In The Rain".
Where I live: Came from Boston to Columbus, Ohio (kicking and screaming)
Occupation: Administrative Assistant – Commercial Real Estate
Favorite movie: .Historically…Some Like it Hot (Jack Lemon makes an awesome woman), Jaws (c’mon…the characters and casting – brilliant!), more recently…The Departed, Atonement (cinematography and music are incredible-pretty darn good story too)
Favorite book: Picky about literature….writer has to be talented..go figure! I’m a sucker for any short stories by Amy Hempel.
Favorite album: Okay, no-one can really commit to this one. There are just way too many. Gosh golly gee….okay I’ll do the island thing…would have to have – Any/All early David Bowie, Boz Scaggs-Next, Billy Pilgrim-Billy Pilgrim, Van Morrison-Tupelo Honey, and then of course anything by Aerosmith.
Three famous people I'd like to meet: Call me selfish but I would tend to want to shoot the ____ with famous people that I can get something from, you know, like knowledge, insight, inspiration, or just a damn good time. So, to that end …let’s get these three at a dinner table with a good glass of vino, 1. The Pope – man-what an interesting philosophical conversation that would be!…the guy’s gotta know a few things, 2. Sting, I think that boy is pretty talented and we’d have to jam, 3. William Shakespeare – just to listen to him form sentences – and fourth (I know only 3 but I couldn’t choose), Sean White – the dude just looks like he’d be fun.
One famous person I actually met: There’s actually a bunch now that I think about it but I guess the most colorful one would have been Gene Simmons from Kiss. He talked to me in the hallway of his hotel while feeling up some leggy blonde.
Best concert experience: God….too many to state and too little time. Funny, but my favorite artists weren’t always my favorite concerts. It’s always the small one’s isn’t it? Well not always, Pink Floyd’s Animals tour at the Garden was pretty impressive (what I remember of it), but the one’s that stand out are: Karla Bonoff at a little intimate club in Cambridge, Mass., The Cars with Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers at the Paradise in Boston, Matchbox Twenty at a tiny little bar here in Columbus before they were known, and last but definitely not least…The Runaways with Joan Jett and Cheri Curry at the Rathskeller in Boston (yah, I was illegal but that’s when it was legal). More recently, Amos Lee was awesome at the Newport in Columbus.
Coolest pop-culture item I own: Okay, now it’s definitely my IPOD. Couldn’t live without the thing. Too bad the sound quality of MP3s bites the big one.
Has anyone found a device that plays them that actually sounds kick ass? Back in the day, it would have been my awesome New York Dolls poster that I can’t find anywhere anymore.
And what movie prop would like to own: Can I get that little black dress that Rene Russo wore in The Thomas Crown Affair?
Beautiful Lunar Eclipse last night. Just thought I'd geek out on that for bit. I was listening to NPR and they had a guest speaking about it. I should have set an alarm because I knew I was going to forget...well I did but luckily it was "put out the recycle bin" night. I was putting out the bin for the morning pickup and looked up. Man nature is cool. It was a cold but clear night. The clouds (just a few) that did pass by gave a great "horror" story feel and didn't really take away from the experience. It was really too cold to hang out and watch but I did watch most of it. We better have enjoy the 3 this past year as the next one isn't in 3 or 4 years. I'll set the alarm for myself right now.
Got some really nice emails too about listening to NEXT while watching the eclipse. How cool is that? I hope NEXT was a good soundtrack to watching celestial beings at work. More later Bro
Almost nothing new out there but for Rap...and I don't really do Rap. I will let someone else telling you about that. It's not that I don't like Rap I do have RUN DMC's Chritmas tune and a few others on my iPod like the Beastie Boys and some DMX. Damn if that man doesn't get you going. Oh I've got Blondie too. She kinda rapped on that one song once. Anyway Rap...not really me.
So let's hear it for the boxset. I guess it's Chritmas time and if you were going to buy me one boxset released today it would have to be
"Oh By the Way" by Pink Floyd. All 16 albums from "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" to "The Division Bell" - all the original artwork, including the inner sleeves. The one major bummer is no extras, it does have a collage poster of Storm Thorgerson's artwork for the band, plus a pair of coasters. If it just had that one extra CD of extra tracks this would be perfect. Oh and by the way which one is Floyd?
EMI tries to get back at Radiohead with the Radiohead Boxset
The Stones release yet another hits package. "Rolled Gold." I can't believe that people don't already own every one of these songs but maybe you want to introduce a young one? I don't know.
And another live DMB this time "live at Piedmont Park". Great version of one of my favorite of theirs "The Dreaming Tree" clocking in at 15:28.
And I know I have buried the headline (kinda) but NEXT now has a store. Now you can look good and feel good.
So the latest from Spoon gives you 12 tunes that expires in at just over 37 minutes. I love the cd but sometimes I like to stretch out. Explore the space between the notes. That brings me to of course Pink Floyd. When I say Floyd most people react with a thought toward “Dark Side of the Moon” or “The Wall” or if they think they may sneak one past me they will say “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” - which I might add is getting the royal treatment in a 3 CD boxset in August and if you don’t own it yet count yourself lucky and just wait for the boxset. Anyway you aren’t wrong by thinking about any of those but I would like to throw a monkey in the Floyd mix. “Meddle”. I really think you should go back and give this one a listen.
It begins with one of the best openings of a Pink Floyd CD “One of These Days”. It’s quiet. The wind blows. Throw on the headphones ladies and gentlemen. Enter the echo and bass. There is only one line of lyric “one of these days I’m going to cut you into little pieces”. It is the band’s basic feeling about music critics. Classic. Bite that hand that feeds you. Yet one more reason I love Floyd.
"A Pillow of Winds" follows and it’s one of the few quiet, acoustic songs in the Pink Floyd catalogue
"Fearless" ends with field recordings of the Liverpool F.C. fans singing "You'll Never Walk Alone", their anthem. Now I am an Arsenal fan and this track almost makes me want to change teams. Plus the fact that Henry and now my favorite Swede are leaving the team but I still wear the Gunnar Gold with pride.
"San Tropez" is a jazz-inflected pop song.
“Echoes” is a triumph. An epic tune that is almost as long as some albums these days. “Echoes” clocks in at almost 27.5 minutes. It is a glorious way to end a Pink Floyd album.
Now My all time favorite PF is “Wish You Were Here” but “Meddle” is a very close second and deserves another listen or maybe even your first listen. You can thank me later while your enjoying the stretching out of the music.
